5 Things: Taboos
Taboo’s are different things in different areas of the world. What one culture does as normal, another finds it as taboo. Taboo is not always one sided, what one culture does the rest of the world may find taboo. Here are 5 of those taboos.

“A prohibition imposed by social custom or as a protective measure” (Noun)
Cannibalism is the Taboo of humans eating the meat and flesh of other humans. This is believed to be an ancient act or even a myth by many, however, there are still tribes who take part in this Taboo. Papua (Indonesia) is home to such tribes, one of the most dreaded of the tribes is known as Asmat. The Asmat would sleep with the skulls of other humans or animals under their heads instead of pillows. [Read More Here]
In America cousin relationships may be one of the biggest taboos. While it is legal for cousins (second and first) to get married in most of the United States, a vast majority of America still finds it to be a taboo. There are 26 states which allow first cousin marriages, no European country prohibits cousin marriages. It is also legal throughout Canada and Mexico. America is the only Western country which prohibits it in certain areas, making it a taboo of the sorts. [Read more on this Taboo here]
Different cultures around the world have different food taboo’s. Delicacies of one culture may be taboo to another. These delicacies are what made up a majority of the show Fear Factor. Most people of Jewish and Muslim religions see pork as a taboo, where beef is common in America it is forbidden in India as the cow is a holy symbol. “More than 1,400 species of protein-packed insects are part of African, Asian, Australian, and Latin American cuisine.” [National Geographic]
In Burma many women begin at a young age adding neck rings over time in order to stretch and make their necks longer. In cultures where this is done thing rings can be a sign of wealth, and the men see it as a sign of beauty. Some women eventually stretch their necks to 12 inches. [View more Body Modifications Here]
While many cultures aim to protect their children from harm, ten percent of Thailand’s population is below poverty. Family’s earn extra income with their prized child fighters, these children are taught in the way of Muay Thai fighting. Sometimes the children are still being breast fed when training starts.
